Who really is Amalek?

After reading the story of Esther and the reading of the prophets the Shabbat before (Shabbat Zachor) 1 Samuel 15:2-34, it occurred to me that actually the Amalekites were all slain and even their King spared by Saul was later killed by the prophet Samuel, 1 Samuel 15:30. So why does the Torah say we should remember Amalek in every generation?.

The answer is responded in rabbinic literature, the memory of Amalek represents a symbol of evil, and Jews are commanded to remember what Amalek did to Israel (Deuteronomy 25:17-19). The commandment is not only about remembering the historical Amalek but also about eradicating the traits that Amalek represents, such as wanton aggression and enmity towards the vulnerable.

In modern times, there is no recognized ethnic group that claims descent from the Amalekites. The association has become more allegorical, used to describe the qualities and actions opposed to the values and well-being of the Jewish people rather than a specific lineage.

It became clear to me following the events of October 7th that Hamas embodies malevolence. I’ve come to believe that there’s a more extensive malign conspiracy at play, as evidenced by the UN’s approach to UNRWA and the handling of the situation in Gaza, in the resolution of the security council yesterday asking for a cease of fire, and now spare Hammas, so they can continue with their evil plans, because they disregard international law and have no intention of releasing the hostages, the situation is a farce. Only Israel would be required to comply with a ceasefire resolution.

Like in the days of Esther, Jews face an enemy who wishes to destroy, murder, and exterminate us. This is not a new threat; simply reading the words of the Purim story reveals that this danger to the Jewish people has existed for thousands of years. Every generation has its wicked Amalek.

  1. Absolutely agree. It is disgusting that the UN must be aware that Hamas’s demands for a complete withdrawal from Gaza or they will not consider hostage releases. Nevertheless they continue to put pressure on Israel for a ceasefire which, as you say, would only allow the evilness which is Hamas to continue their mission to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. History repeats itself.
